What it claims to do (taken from wishtrend)

Shielding Vitamin E, Healing Vitamin C #goodbye active oxygen #synergetic vitamins #antioxidant network The KLAIRS Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask is most effective when used with vitamin C. The two vitamins enhance the effectiveness of each other through the antioxidant network and protect the skin from active oxygen, preventing aging. In addition, vitamin E prevents vitamin C from being oxidized before being absorbed by the skin, intensifying the skin-improving effects of vitamin C.

An antioxidant network that protects the skin What does the active oxygen caused by UV rays, stress, etc. do to our skin?
1) Vitamin E becomes oxidized when active oxygen is lost by the primary defenses.
2) Vitamin C reduces the level of oxidized vitamin E to its original state and reactivates it.
3) The reduced vitamin E removes active oxygen again and prevents cell destruction and aging.
4) Vitamin C has a powerful toning effect.

Vitamin coating for an extended hydration #wake up hydrated #the mask for parched skin Vitamin E is dissolved in oil, which provides a strong moisturizing power. The pudding-like texture transforms into a rich essence when in contact with the skin, maintaining the moisture for at least 8 hours, even for dry skin.

Upgrade by mixing #vitamin drop+vitamin mask #soothing cream+vitamin mask #the perfect DIY duo What if you could enhance all the functions of the current skin care product that works for you simply by adding a vitamin mask? Mix the vitamin mask with your favorite skin care product and enjoy an upgraded version of additional brightening, wrinkle-repairing, and moisturizing with the antioxidant power.
*The mixing ratio can be adjusted freely depending on the skin type and desired texture of the product.

What it’s like

borrowed from wishtrend to show the ‘memory’ texture

be careful not to leave it on its side cuz it will seep

pud

  • First and foremost, it has that kind of memory texture. If you’ve ever used a product that was rich in collagen, you would have seen how the cream is able to resettle after disturbance. This basically puts it as creamier than a gel, but lighter than a standard cream
  • Scent: this on was more complex to me, but I can say it has a bright fresh fragrance
    • I first detect floral, kind of a sweet lavender scent
    • then I get somewhat of an herby lotion
    • aaaand then light touch of something citrus… but more like limonene and nothing too fancy.
  • Texture: crackly cream. like you tried to make a jello cream. If you don’t squish it on your skin it can and will bounce off onto the floor
  • Absorption & Finish: now it does have a film forming agent, but I found that it absorbed before it would really form a nice film. This is probably in part due to my dry skin. I feel like oilier skin types would probably be able to use this more like a sleeping pack/mask as it is advertised. But to me this makes a better summertime moisturizer. It does have a more shiny finish, which made me think it might be a good sleeping pack, but it didn’t seem to have the same staying power as say the laneige water sleeping mask.

How I used this

This is chiefly marketed as a multipurpose mask, leaning more towards sleeping pack to be the last step in your skincare routine. This way didn’t really work for me. I didn’t feel that it formed enough of a film, which is fine. It was much richer than a standard sleeping pack and for my dry skin this was better as a moisturizer, but lettuce go through some different ways to use it

  1. As a Mask/Sleeping pack: my skin absorbs it too much for it to last as a film, no go for me
  2. As a Cream/Moisturizer: yes, this is where it worked the best for me
  3. Mixing with Vitamin C: I really wish I had the Klairs freshly juiced vitamin C drop which is the partner to this vit e. cream. but alas I only had my timeless and I didn’t notice much improvement in terms of vitamin C efficacy, but the timeless formula is pushed to the max LAA % and already included vitamin E.
  4. Mixing with other serums: I found that it did mix well with other products. Although the texture does make it a little bit hard to actually mix up.
  5. Mixing with oils: This was the best mixing experiment since it turned this kind of jello-like cream into a true cream. And was the perfect way to make it fit better with my dry skin.

Isn’t that Tamanu oil pretty

Wishtrend pointed out three key ingredients

Vitamin E (Tocopherol Acetate)

1) A major lipid-soluble antioxidant in the skin. It is found in most of the skin’s epidermis, dermis and stratum corneum, and protects against peroxide and pro-oxidants (prevents oxidation in cosmetics).
2) The skin’s protective function will be weakened if Vitamin E levels are insufficient, allowing harmful foreign substances to invade and promote aging of the skin.
3) Prevents cell aging by keeping the cell membrane from lipid peroxidation.
4) Possesses skin softening properties, and soothes inflammation.
5) Protects skin against damage caused by sunlight.

Niacinamide

1) Reduces pigmentation by preventing melanin pigment from migrating to the epidermis.
2) Suppresses sebum secretion, and improves acne caused by oily skin.
3) Helps stabilize vitamin C, having enhanced effects when used with vitamin C.
4) Formulated with an adequate concentration of 2%, as it may induce burning when used at high concentration.

Adenosine

1) Active ingredient prescribed in maximum dose, to serve the function of improving wrinkles.
2) Strengthens fibroblast proliferation in dermal layer, and promotes collagen synthesis.
3) Possesses powerful anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in wound healing and regeneration.
4) Effectively improves acne caused by oily skin.

It also features the goodness of ceramides, centella and many other plant extracts which are very ubiquitous in Korean skincare

History Lesson

If you’re new to Kbeauty, I would like to take a moment to talk a bit about a popular product that was discontinued in 2015; the mizon returning starfish cream.

the mems

This was probably the first product discontinued that caused such a stir, some shady online sellers were listing what was a 15-20 dollar cream for 50+ dollars. It was wild times for the kbeauty world.

I will admit, that once it was announced to be discontinued I stocked up a bit, partly because I always loved the packaging of the cream and party because it’s a light medium weight gel cream. With a memory like texture, same as the vitamin e mask.

But it was always more liquidy

some of my last precious starfish bits

So why even bring this Kbeauty relic up? Well, in my expert opinion, the klairs vitamin e mask in effect is a very close dupe for the returning starfish cream. They both focus on

  • brightening with adenosine and niacinamide: and they both gradually brighten the skin in my experience
  • hydration with a healthy amount of humectants including hyaluronic acid
  • moisturizing but straddling that point somewhere between a cream and a gel.

Granted the initial textures are different, but the feel on the face is almost the same. I really think that if you loved the mizon returning starfish cream, you should definitely check out the klairs mask.

Final Thoughts

Well I’ve used this for over a month now and here are my thoughts/recommendations

  • Packaging: It comes in a heavy and durable plastic jar, which is pretty and fine for myself, but is not the most hygienic and ingredient protecting of options. I’m not sure if it’s too thick for an airless pump, but I don’t think it’s the right consistency for a tube.
  • Ingredients: They kept the star ingredient high up on the list which I like to see (vit. e) but don’t go too crazy with the extracts. I like having brightening agents and plant bits, but I understand that too many different ingredients risks causing irritation. I feel like I get the best of both worlds with this formula
  • Effect/Claims
    • It doesn’t claim too much other than improving the skin and helping the effect of vitamin C.
    • If you use only this mask and vitamin C, then yes I would agree that this mask would help LAA formulas as the addition of Vit. E has been shown to help stabilize Vit. C.
    • I do find it a great summertime moisturizer and it is transitioning well into fall with me.
    • If there was one effect I noticed the most is that it was brightening, but it took time, it’s more subtle on me.
  • Who I think would like this?
    • Dry skin people as myself would enjoy this as a cream both day and night
      • and mixing in oils works well
    • Combo/Normal skin people would likely enjoy this as a thin layer during the day and a thicker layer at night
    • Oily skin I suspect would prefer to use this only at night as it does have a more oily finish, but it isn’t wildly oily on me.
  • Cons?
    • Not everyone likes Jar packaging
    • The cream is pretty fragranced, I personally like the scent, but it’s strong enough where I think those with more sensitive noses might want to try and smell it first before buying
  • Final Pro
    • It fills the Mizon returning starfish cream shaped hole in my being.
  • Price
    • currently it’s on sale for $18.90 down from $27 on Wishtrend
    • you should be able to use the code WISHVITE10 for an extra 10% off the mask (valid until 10/31/2017)

  1. Nina

Your Tamanu oil is really pretty!
Also (of course) loved your detailed review, I was interested in trying this product but I was so puzzled by what the brand said it was for and how it worked.

    • Hi Nina! Thank you so much for reading and I totes agree the whole explanation on how to use the product was confusing. I felt like if they just said it was a multipurpose gel cream that we are calling a mask, I would’ve had the right frame of mind about it from the get go 😆
