Weekly Dud: Yes to Cucumbers, Tomatoes & Coconuts paper masks

The Intro: Feel free to skip if this isn’t your first rodeo

This isn’t the first time I’ve spoken about dud products. I made a #weekofduds post on my instagram about this product and others that I tout as being:

Products I bought because I thought they would work well and I wanted them to work well but in the end they didn’t.

I’ve seen many an unliked or unloved product get advertised as being terrible, awful and worth less than nothing. Now I’m sure there are some products out there that are formulated terribly for human skin, but I tend to side more with the group that says hey, not every ingredient or formulation will work for every single person #reality. Some ingredients do well for dry skin, others do well for those with cystic acne and some may only target blackheads. I think simply adding “YMMV” (your mileage may vary) at the end of a post without some thought as to why it worked well or didn’t for you is not useful. That’s why I have my profile on my side bar, but I will try to ensure I put my skin type and concerns in review posts from here on out. Reading a glowing review without knowledge of a person’ s skin type, issues or sensitives may find you buying a product that won’t work for you at all. Which is what I’ve done many times over. Now I’m a little more cognizant of ingredients…. but its pretty evident from my Instagram that packaging lures me in strongly as well.

My skin type

  • Dry Skin
  • Non- Sensitive (literally have not reacted to hundreds of products over the course of my lifetime)
  • Concerns
    • blackheads around the chin and on nose
    • The occasional pimple
    • inhibiting wrinkle formation
    • preventing cancer
    • not eating enough eggs

Why did I buy this?

Well I’ve seen US based sheetmask companies, but they usually still make their sheetmasks in Korea. This was the first time I saw one that was an American company who made their sheetmasks in the US. And it’s somewhat of a ‘Green’ beauty brand so I was like let’s try it out. And I bought all three, they have other single use masks in the line but they’re not sheetmasks/paper masks.

So I’ve never done a group of masks before, but let’s go from tolerable to intolerable.

Tolerable mask = Yes to Coconuts

  1. Fit: this one was stretched out on one side
  2. Material is a cotton mask I presume
  3. Essence was a clear thin gel
  4. Scent: definitely smells strongly of coconuts
  5. Time: definitely lasts about 30 mins, though the recommended time is 10mins
  6. Effects: this is meant to be ultra hydrating and smell like a tropical vacation I’d say yes this is definitely an oilier mask and does smell how I want tropical places to smell…. like coconuts

Thoughts: The ingredients here aren’t too terrible, but the addition of coconut oil makes this mask only possible for people who don’t break out from it. Coconut oil is rated highly comedogenic, meaning that it is often the cause of acne for people. This doesn’t necessarily mean you will get acne from it, as for myself I can coat my body and hair and insides in coconut oil and not have a single problem.

Would I rebuy? No, at $3.29 cents this mask just isn’t that amazing to warrant such a high price especially when I can get paper masks imported from overseas with better fits and ingredients

The “I was not prepared mask” = Yes to Tomatoes

      • Fit: Definitely a long mask, and I have a picture this time
      • Material is a cotton mask I presume
      • Essence was a clear thin gel
      • Scent: RUBBING ALCOHOL. My eyes omg the burn
      • Time: definitely lasts about 30 mins, though the recommended time is 10mins, and my recommended time is none
      • Effects: this is meant to be an acne fighting paper mask since it incorporates 0.5% salicylic acid, which is probably my favorite acid right after ascorbic acid. I didn’t notice much of an effect right after or in the morning after using the mask

Who’s ready for the @yestocarrots tomato sheetmask? It features an active ingredient of 0.5% salicylic acid which is something I use occasionally to keep my breakouts and blackheads at bay. For a quick review. . Which is why you’re here: . . . Out of the package the mask is very soft, I was surprised. Like a slightly more plush tony moly material. . . The fit is not what I’m used to, definitely made for people with longer faces and noses. It’s not as wide as most masks I’m used to which is why you’re seeing the bunching/pleats forming. The eye flap area is also very long, not as wide as most masks so be careful not to rip the area. . . . Scent: air this out a little. The scent of alcohol is very strong which is why I’m squinting. . . . Essence: clear and not tacky, there’s about a teaspoon left in the packet. I should have put that on my face before the mask since the mask started lifting around the 15min mark. . . . Effect: well there’s the temporary brightening from the cooling effect. I’ll have to wait till morning to see if it did anything for my blackheads. . . . I’m curious if all these masks have a strong alcohol scent. It’s a little painful to the eyes as it evaporates. . . . #yestocarrots #ultabeauty #ulta #shopping #rasianbeauty #asianbeauty #koreanbeauty #koreanskincare #koreancosmetic #kbeauty #instablogger #instablogging #instabeautyblogging #beautyblogger #beautyblogging #blogger #blog #instaskincare #skincare #스킨 #스킨케어 #코스매틱 #뷰티 #mask #masklife #sheetfaced #sheetmask #sheetmasking #bblogger #natural

SD alcohol aside the mask ingredients are alright. And normally I love a little bit of alcohol in my skincare products as they help penetrate my tough skin a bit better.

But my god, there was so much alcohol in this mask it was burning my eyes. I have never encountered a mask with such a strong alcohol scent and my sense of smell isn’t very acute.

So my thoughts? This is the first time where I will say buy at your own risk. I wish I could return the mask, I want my $3.29 back.

The most terrifying mask aka: Yes to Cucumbers

I have no idea how they messed this up so bad, HOW CAN YOU MESS UP CUCUMBERS?

  6. Effects: this is meant to be soothing and calming to the skin and soul. LIES. LIES and DECEPTION

Let me tell you a story

When I was an undergraduate in Organic Chemistry lab we were working on purification and that day we were beginning to use methylene chloride as a solvent. Being stupid and inexperienced undergrads we felt completely protected by our Nitrile gloves. So while working with the solvent (CH2CL2) we often spilled a little on our gloves. My labmates and I would exclaim wow how cold as it would evaporate off our gloved hands, and it was incredibly cold due to volatility blah blah blah. And we could keep working on our assignments. Maybe a few minutes later our hands were feeling itchy, but when you’re in a 3 hour lab you’re focusing on getting finished… and not the progression of a chemical burn. Pretty soon the itching began to burn and this is the time when you look at your hands and notice that your gloves have started to disintegrate and you’re getting a chemical burn. You rip your gloves off and start cooling your hands under flowing water per Lab safety protocols. And from that point on every time you hear someone say, “wow it feels so cold”, you tell them to change their gloves immediately.

Back to the mask

So upon opening you’ll smell a pungent alcohol odor and when you get the mask on your face it’s cool and wet. But suddenly you’ll start to feel it get cold, and then keep getting colder. That’s when the memories of methylene chloride on your hands come surging up. HOLY S**T you’ll say as you rip off the mask and start rinsing off your face worried now that you’ve just given yourself a chemical peel. Acting like an undergrad and checking the ingredients you notice MENTHOL is in there. But I didn’t care. This was a terrifying experience. The menthol plus large amounts of alcohol is just the absolute worst combo. Once again I want my money back.

So who might these masks work for?

Well there’s only one I’d recommend people to try and it’s the coconut one. But it’s only going to be possible for those who don’t get acne from the coconut oil. The rest I’d say steer clear off, they’re not a pleasant experience. I hope that maybe Yes to carrots sees this and considers reducing the amount of denatured alcohol in the tomatoes and cucumber masks in addition to reducing the amount of menthol. I think they’re on the right path towards making a good mask, since you can tell they’re incorporating a lot of nice extracts that are hydrating and anti-inflammatory, but their finished product just can’t compare to what is being imported from Asia.

I hope someone finds this useful or at least entertaining

Cheers
